The book was published by King in 1985 in order to introduce Bachman's work to fans who did not know about his pseudonym's work and wanted to be able to get copies of them (few of Bachman's early novels were still in circulation at the time). It opens with an introduction by King called "Why I Was Bachman", explaining how and why he took on the persona of Bachman, as well as how it was found out by the public. Another version with a new introduction to coincide The Regulators with the title "The Importance of Being Bachman" was published in 1996. Going out of print

Due to the similarities between Rage and the Columbine High School massacre, the US editions of this collection and the aforementioned novel were allowed to go out of print by the author. The remaining three novels are still in print and are published as separate books.
