Encyclopedia > The Birch Wathen Lenox School

The Birch Wathen Lenox School is one of 322 independent schools located in New York, New York.


The school was created in 1991 through the merger of the Birch Wathen School and the Lenox School.


The coeducational Birch Wathen School was founded in 1921 by Louise Birch and Edith Wathen, while Jessica Cosgrave Finch founded the Lenox School in 1916. Lenox was an all girls' school until 1974. The combined school has 370 students (in 2004) in kindergarten through twelfth grade.


Famous alumni include Barbara Walters and Brooke Shields.


The school colors are green, white, and gold. Its mascot is a lion. Athletic teams fall under the Independent School Athletic League or the Girls Independent School Athletic League. In 2004, the boys' basketball team won the New York State championship (the "Independent" title of the New York State Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association).


The school is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, at 210 East 77th Street. It is one of 340 independent schools in the Cum Laude Society. Frank Carnabuci is currently the headmaster of the school.
