The Blue Castle tells the story of Valancy Stirling, a 29-year-old "spinster" who is ridiculed, unloved and friendless. It takes place in the early 1920's in the fictional town of Deerwood, located in Ontario, Canada. Valancy is a homely and quiet girl who has never accomplished anything in her dull, drab and uneventful life. Then something happens to make her realize she can embrace freedom and live her life to the fullest rather than merely exist. A doctor tells her she only has one year left to live. Valancy immediately rebels against her rigid upbringing and strict, unloving family, as she decides to live her remaining year on earth as a free-spirited and joyous young woman. "The Blue Castle" is a magical and beautiful look at how one young woman changed her destiny by eliminating her fear and casting aside the rules and prejudices of her narrow-minded family. The most colorful and memorable character in this novel, along with Valancy, is "Barney Snaith," a free-thinker and rugged individualist who also questions authority in an era when people were expected to behave and act the same. As Valancy begins thinking for herself, her life changes and becomes more mystical and fulfilling than she ever dreamed possible. This novel remains a favorite all over the world and is still in print. It was first published in 1926.
The BlueCastle was written by L. Montgomery in 1926.
Valancy escapes her drab and sorrowful world with imaginary escapes to her BlueCastle in Spain where she is beautiful, charming, admired and loved - everything her true life lacks.
The censure and rejection by the town of the main characters (Valancy, Barney, Abel and Cissy) is depicted as a profound social commentary.
