The Daily Orange is the independent student newspaper published in Syracuse, New York. It is free, and published daily during the Syracuse University academic year. Lengthy legal battles gained The Daily Orange its independence from Syracuse University in 1971. It was one of the first college papers to become fully independent from its parent college. Its alumni work at nearly every major newspaper in the nation -- New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Philadelphia Inquirer, Dallas Morning News, Boston Globe -- in a variety of reporting, editing, design and photographic capacities.

The Daily Orange is also unique in featuring its own student art, comics and editorial cartoons. It is the only college paper in the country to rely solely on students to fill a comics page. The Daily Orange has produced many famous cartoonists, such as Vaughn Bode, Robb Armstrong (creator of Jumpstart), Brad Anderson (creator of Marmaduke) and Nicholas Gurewitch (creator of the Perry Bible Fellowship). Vaughn Bodé (July 22, 1941 - July 18, 1975), was an influential artist involved in and inspirational to underground comics, graphic design, and graffiti. ... Publisher reported circulation for 2005 was 9,000 copies, with a readership of 20,000.

The paper has in the past decade won numerous awards, including more than a dozen "story of the year" awards in several categories from the Associated Collegiate Press and top-story honors from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. It is also the best designed student newspaper in the country, as voted at the University of Missouri Student Society for News Design awards in 2005.
