"The Drinkard Singers" was a notable gospel family group whose members included Lee Drinkard and Cissy Houston among other relatives. Lee Drinkard was the mother of soul singers Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick while Cissy was the mother of pop/soul singer Whitney Houston. The group performed and recorded between the 1940s and 1990s. She led a successful career as a backup singer for such artists as Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, and Aretha Franklin, and is now primarily a solo artist.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Houston was the youngest of eight children of parents Nitch and Delia Drinkard.
