The movie revolves around a Buckley class destroyer escort, the USS Haynes (DE-181), and a German U-boat attempting to rendevous with a German merchant raider in the South Atlantic Ocean during World War II. The Haynes is commanded by Captain Murrell (Robert Mitchum), a former merchant marine sailor whose wife was killed when his freighter was sunk by a torpedo during the Second Battle of the Atlantic. Now in command of a destroyer escort, Captain Murrell must track down and destroy a U-boat commanded by Captain von Stolberg (Curd Jürgens) in a personal battle of wits between the two captains. In the end, Captain Murrell rams the U-boat with his destroyer, sinking both. A well directed beautifully shot minor war classic, "The Enemy Below" captures the feeling of being at each by actually shooting on a mock up of a destroyer.
"The Enemy Below" won an Academy Award for best visual effects in 1957 and, although the effects are impressive for the time, the film that should have been nominated and won was Ray Harryhausen's "20 Million Miles to Earth" with its outstanding stop motion animation.
A well directed, suspenseful thriller at sea, "The Enemy Below" comes from a lost era when war was much more fl and white.

The Enemy Below has long been one of my favorite World War II films, ever since I caught it late at night on some cable channel during my college years in the early 1990s.
The Enemy Below is an excellent though often overlooked entry in the submarine movie subgenre.
The Enemy Below marked the high point in the directing career of Dick Powell, a former child star of the '30s who had become a reputable dramatic actor in the '40s.
