On March 5, 1770, Matthew Kilroy is one of the many British soldiers that fire at the mob of angry colonists, and is charged with manslaughter. The commander, Captain Thomas Preston is found innocent. Matthew Kilroy and another soldier named Hugh Montgomery were both convicted of manslaughter, they were branded on their thumbs. It is then that Rachel realizes that she has to sacrifice the place she had worked so hard to earn in order to save the life of a dear friend. She must risk her reputation, whatever happens to her in the future.
