A New York City advertising executive (played by Cuba Gooding, Jr.) who is about to land a big account, has his life turned upside down when it's revealed that he has lied about having a college degree. After being fired, his life is shaken further by his debtors who had counted on him paying after landing the account. Having to go on the run, he is called back to his southern town roots, when his aunt dies. At the reading of the will, he learns he has been asked to assume the mantle of choir director of his aunt's church and if he can get the choir in the Gospel Explosion in Atlanta, he will inherit stock worth $150,000. Unfortunately the choir is not in very good shape and he has to start recruiting. Among others, he gets three prisoners to join. More importantly, he gets a "sinner" (Beyoncé Knowles) from one of the local night clubs to join. While initially scorned and resisted, her voice wins everyone but the hardcore church goers in the end. Critics panned Cuba Gooding Jr.'s performance and praised Knowles character and thought that she deserved a golden globe and even oscar nod for her role as Lily. he Fighting Temptations is like an in-joke: a person who is not of the same cultural background as the characters in the film won't get the joke.
To such a person The Fighting Temptations will be a congregation of clichés, but those who are of the southern, African-American Baptist community portrayed in this movie will see it as something more: an honest portrayal of a culture that's been poorly represented in the cinema.
The "...and they lived happily ever after" ending is bound to irk cynics, though these are the people who should abstain from the film if they are not able to leave their cynicism at the door.
