Controversy and discontinuity The series has "retconned" many aspects of the original show leading some fans to question its canonicity. In the original Flintstones series, conflicting accounts of Fred and Wilma's first meeting are given. In the episode "Love Letters On The Rocks" it is indicated that Wilma and Fred knew each other as teenagers and attended the same high school while a later episode, "Bachelor Daze", had them meet as young adults. Also in the original series, Dino first appeared in the episode "The Snorkasaurus Hunter" (even though his character was in the opening credits of every episode prior), whereas this series has him as Fred's childhood pet. There are many elements of the show that have been incorporated into subsequent Flintstone productions, leading to the conclusion that Hanna-Barbera is treating this series as canon. For example, one of the characters originating in this series, Philo Quartz, later appeared as an adult in A Flintstones Christmas Carol from 1994. Also, this was the first series in which Wilma's last name was expressly stated as Slaghoople whereas the original series had it as Pebble. This name change was also carried over.
