The For Carnation are a post-rock band from Louisville, Kentucky. Formed in 1994 by Brian McMahan who is the only constant group member. McMahan's previous band Slint hinted at the distinctive sound and sombre aesthetic he would create in the For Carnation. To date they have released an EP and three albums: Fight Songs (Matador Records, 1995), Marshmallows (Matador, 1996),Promised Works (Runt, 1997) and The For Carnation (Touch and Go Records, 2000). The term post-rock was coined by Simon Reynolds in issue 123 of The Wire (May 1994) to describe a sort of music using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbres and textures rather than riffs and powerchords. ... CARNATIC, or Karnatak (Kannada, Karnata, Karnatakadesa), a name given by Europeans to a region of southern India, between the Eastern Ghats and the Coromandel coast, in the presidency of Madras.
The Northern Carnatic extended from the river Pennar to the northern limit of the country; and the chief town was Ongole.' The Carnatic, as above defined, comprehended within its limits the maritime provinces of Nellore, Chingleput, South Arcot, Tanjore, Madura and Tinnevelly, besides the inland districts of North Arcot and Trichinopoly.
The Pandya kingdom practically coincided in extent with the districts of Madura and Tinnevelly; that of the Cholas extended along the Coromandel coast from Nellore to Pudukottai, being bounded on the north by the Pennar river and on the south by the Southern Vellaru.
The Peninsula and Oriental Passenger Steamer "Carnatic" was built by Samuda Bros of London and classified as an "iron framed planked passenger steamer of 1776 tons." Her dimensions were 89.8m x 11.6m with a draught of 7.8m.
The Carnatic was launched in December 1862 and registered by P and O (although that abbreviation was not used in those days) in March 1863.
The Courts decision was that the stranding of the Carnatic was "due to a grave default of the Master" and consequently suspended his Masters certificate for 9 months.
