Significance of title

The title, The Green Years, has several connotations. On one hand, this is a story about a boy's coming of age. However, the central character, Robert Shannon, also has a fascination with the natural world. Also, he is an Irish boy growing up in Scotland. In the novel, he is forced for a time to wear a green suit made for him by his Grandma, and is mercilessly teased because of it.

Structure of the novel

The novel consists of three "books." Book One portrays the protagonist's arrival in Scotland as a child, following the death of his parents back in Ireland. Book Two focuses on the character's adolescence and ends on a pair of tragedies: the death of his best friend and his failure to win a scholarship to medical school, due to illness. Book Three begins with the protagonist as an embittered figure, entering the adult working world with no hope for the future. However, the death of his grandfather brings him an inheritance that will allow him to pursue his dreams, after all.

Green came into contact with bandleader Willie Mitchell of Memphis' Hi Records in 1969, when Mitchell hired him as a vocalist for a Texas show with Mitchell's band and then asked him to sign with the label.
Green's debut album with Hi Records was Green is Blues, a slow, horn-driven album that allowed Green to show off his powerful and expressive voice, with Mitchell arranging, engineering and producing.
On October 18, 1974, Green's girlfriend, Mary Woodson, poured boiling grits on him as he was showering (because he had rejected her marriage proposal), causing second-degree burns on his back, stomach, and arm.

Green living is no longer a kind of countercultural self-punishment in which you must stop enjoying the comfort and personal luxuries in order to give back to the environment.
In more recent years, green architecture firms, publications and building materials have crept from a small, obscure niche to the forefront of culture and design.
Five years ago you would mention green building and get a lot of blank stares, but now green newsletters and publications, such as the monthly newsletter "Environmental Building News," a veritable bible for anybody leaning toward green, has promoted the idea of green architecture to reality.
