Band History

The first Hellacopters rehearsal took place on 4th November 1994 between a few friends. Initially started as a side-project by Nicke Andersson, a founding member of the very influential Sweidsh death metal band Entombed, with Dregen, Kenny Håkansson, and Robert Eriksson, the band released their first single - 'Killing Alan' - in January 1995 on their own Psychout label having recorded the single after 3 rehearsals. After releasing another single, '1995', the Hellacopters signed to White Jazz Records and released their debut album 'Supershitty to the Max' in June 1996. They then toured extensively, picking up a Swedish Grammy for their album, and recruiting Anders Lindström shortly before they supported KISS on their Scandinavian dates in June 1997 after which they released their follow-up 'Payin' the Dues'. Due to the success of his new band, Andersson left his former primary band to concentrate on the Hellacopters KISS is an American glam rock/hard rock/black metal band formed in New York City in 1973. ...


In early 1998 the band toured Europe with Gluecifer, with Dregen leaving the band to concentrate on his main concern the Backyard Babies after the tour. With stand-in guitarists Chuck Pounder and Mattias Hellberg, The Hellacopters then played 114 gigs in 18 countries including United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. In September of that year they recorded their third album 'Grande Rock' with Anders Lindström playing second guitar. Gluecifer was a hard rock band based in Oslo, Norway. ... In February 1999 Robert Dahlqvist was recruited to play guitar, completing the current line-up. With him, the Hellacopters have recorded three further albums and continue to tour.

The buzz around The Hellacopters and their quickly growing resume translated into a deal with Sweden's White Jazz Records, who released the band's debut full-length, Supershitty to the Max, in 1996.
By this time, The Hellacopters were widely hailed as Sweden's best rock outfit, and they would not lose sight of that as they went into the studio to record By the Grace of God.
The resulting Rock and Roll Is Dead was recorded in The Hellacopters' hometown of Stockholm at Atlantis Studios with longtime producer Chips Kiesbye (Millencolin, Sahara Hotnights) and engineers Michael Ilbert (from the Hives and Supergrass to Celine Dion and the Backstreet Boys) and Janne Hansson (from ABBA to Sonic Youth).
