Encyclopedia > The Hundred (Star Trek)

The Hundred are a group of 100 Changelings from the Star Trek universe, seen primarily in the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. As infants, they were sent from the Changeling homeworld into the galaxy. It was hoped that these young Changelings would learn all they could about the species they encountered and would one day return to the Changeling population. To that end, The Hundred were programmed with a strong desire to return home, to reunite with their people and rejoin the Great Link. Odo was the first of The Hundred to return home. His journey was aided in large part by the existence and discovery of the Bajoran wormhole. Unfortunately for the Changelings, Odo's experiences among the Solids (the Changelings' term for humanoids) had given him a sense of justice and morality that conflicted with their own. Odo was horrified by the amount of death and dominance his people had caused as the leaders of the Dominion. For a time, Odo chose to remain with his friends at Deep Space Nine. Upon conclusion of the Dominion War, however, Odo agreed to rejoin his people to help cure them of the disease that had spread throughout the Great Link. Only two other members of The Hundred have so far been seen in the Star Trek universe.

  • An unnamed infant Changeling was discovered amongst salvage items that Quark had had purchased. This infant had apparently drifted through space without significant contact with sentient species before it was salvaged, and had thus lacked any need or opportunity to alter its form. Odo took it upon himself to help this proto-Changeling develop its shapeshifting abilities, forming a deep, near-parental emotional bond with the infant. With help from Odo and Mora Pol, the Bajoran doctor who had studied the infant Odo, the proto-Changeling made noticable progress in awareness of its environment and altering its form as a reaction to said enviromnent. Unfortunately, the infant was found to be suffering from a deterioration of its physical structure, presumed to be an effect of radation exposure while in space. All efforts to halt this illness failed, and the proto-Changeling died in Odo's hands--but left its surrogate parent with a gift of sorts. Odo's shapeshifting ability had been taken away by the Great Link as punishment for killing another Changeling, trapping him in his customary humanoid form; as the infant Changeling died, it merged its own substance with Odo's, re-catalyzing Odo's own powers. ("The Begotten")
  • Laas -- He was sent out long before Odo, and had at least a century more knowledge and experience. His experiences throughout the universe had caused a disdain and mistrust of humanoids. While not sharing his beliefs, Odo did learn a great deal about himself and what he could do from Laas. After his encounter with Odo, Laas decided to continue his journey, and attempted to find the rest of The Hundred, in order to form a new Link. ("Chimera")

The Future of Star Trek (1130 words)
Star Trek's current caretaker, Rick Berman, is not the visionary the franchise needs to guide it into its next reincarnation.
Trek needs someone who can bring a new and strong vision not only to the Star Trek universe, but to the conventions of science fiction as well.
Most importantly, Star Trek needs creative minds who are willing to fight Paramount for the creative freedom to do whatever it takes to guide the franchise where it needs to go -- even if that means permanently changing the Trek universe.
The Fascist Ideology of Star Trek -- and Firefly, the Anti-Trek (3762 words)
Star Trek typically reflects certain political, social, and metaphysical views, and on close examination they are not worthy of the kind of tribute that is often paid to Star Trek as representing an edifying vision of things.
Star Trek has a Utopia to picture, or at least a world free of many of the ills perceived in the present, but it doesn't have to deal with anything so inconvenient as the experience of history.
Star Trek is free to disparage religious belief and ignore traditional religions without the need to address the existential mysteries and tragedies of real life in ways that have actually meant something to the vast majority of human beings.
