The Irrawaddy (Burmese: ဧရာဝတီ; MLCTS: ei: ra wa. ti) is a newsmagazine owned by the Irrawaddy Publishing Group (IPG). The company was founded in 1992 by expatriate Burmese citizens living in Thailand, and although unaffiliated to any political groups or the Burmese government, does have a slant toward pro-democracy movements. The Irrawaddy is published in both English and Burmese, and primarily covers news from Myanmar. It also covers news from Southeast Asia. Currently, it could be rated as the 1st news magazine in Analysis of Burmese politics, featuring news, articles, sciences, and editorials. History

The Irrawaddy magazine was founded in 1999, Chiang Mai, Thailand by its current editor and director Aung Zaw. But, its origin dated back to 1992. Aung Zaw, who was a student activist from Rangoon University, Burma on Burmese political affairs, left Burma after Martial Law imposed in 1988 and two years later, founded Burma Information Group (BIG), in Bangkok. He later updated its previous name of Burma Information Group to The Irrawaddy Publishing Group in 1999 in reasons of covering news features in South East Asia. The delta of the Irrawaddy forms, wherever cultivable, a vast sheet of rice, with cotton, sesamum, and tobacco as subsidiary crops.
