It was originally released as a double album in June of 1979 on Polydor Records in the United Kingdom and MCA Records in the United States. The soundtrack contains the songs that appeared in the movie except for the performances of "Happy Jack" was a leftover from the Live at Leeds sessions. "I Can See For Miles" was from the same performance as "My Generation" on The Smothers Brothers Show but this time the double-tracked vocals are split in stereo. "My Wife" was from a concert The Who filmed but later aborted. "Tommy Can You Hear Me" had a longer outro with Roger repeating the word "Tommy" before screaming "'ELLO" to end it.
