Biography

The Kovenant (at the time known as Covenant) was formed in 1993 by two black metal artists known as Nagash and Blackheart; they both met when Blackheart decided to help Nagash with his one-man band, Troll. After releasing a demo titled From the Storm of Shadows no one seemed to pay attention to them, but finally a record label, Mordgrimm, took notice of them and released their first album, In Times Before the Light in 1997. The album was created when they were both at a young age and they established a fan base in Norway. 1993 (MCMXCIII) was a common year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar and marked the Beginning of the International Decade to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination (1993-2003). ... In 1998 Covenant signed with German major label, Nuclear Blast, and recruited four other members to form an actual band. These people were Astennu (of Dimmu Borgir, Carpe Tenebrum), Sverd (of Arcturus), Sarah Jezebel Deva (of Cradle of Filth and others), and Hellhammer (of Mayhem and others). With the new recruits they released their second album, Nexus Polaris, which was hugely successful (thanks for Nuclear Blast's promotions) and is considered their best album to date by fans. The album resulted in the band getting a Norwegian Grammy for Best Hard Rock band. After the album, Sverd, Astennu, and Sarah were fired for various reasons (according to Lex in some interviews) and only Hellhammer remained. The band found themselves being sued by Swedish EBM band, Covenant (band) (of the same name). The Swedish band argued that they had the name "Covenant" before them, so they were forced to change their name. Simply adding "The" in front of the name would not suffice, because also a Dutch heavy metal band was named The Covenant since 1988. They added "The" and replaced the "C" with a "K" to avoid any future confusions and they are now simply known as "The Kovenant". Then in 1999, The Kovenant recorded and released, Animatronic and it showed them going from symphonic black metal to industrial metal, although some people prefer to categorize it as cyber metal or space metal. Soon the band changed their names to suit their new direction. Nagash became "Lex Icon", Blackheart became "Psy Coma", and Hellhammer became "Von Blomberg". They won another Norwegian Grammy and gained a new member while they toured the USA named Angel. Although the new sound was frowned upon by some more tradional black metal listeners, the music also inspired others, like Black Nocturnal Darkness on their 2002 Xenobite-album. 1999 (MCMXCIX) was a common year starting on Friday, and was designated the International Year of Older Persons by the United Nations. ...
