Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR (http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lcddata.html?ticker=KR)) is an American retail grocery store chain, founded by Bernard Henry "Barney" Kroger in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio. It has an estimated 51 billion dollars in sales per year, which is either the highest or second-highest total for grocery chains in the United States (depending on whether non-grocery sales from Wal-Mart are counted).

Kroger operates under many trading names, including Kroger, Ralphs, King Soopers (in Colorado), City Market, Dillons, Smith's Food and Drug, Fry's Food, QFC, Kessel Food Market, Cala Foods, Ownens Market, JayC Food Markets, Hilander, Gerbes, Bakers, Food4Less, FoodsCo, Fry's Marketplace, Fred Meyer, Kwik Shop, Quick Stop, LoafNJug, Turkey Hill Mini Marts, and Pay Less Food Markets.

It has its headquarters in Cincinnati but spans many states with store formats that include supermarkets, hypermarkets, department stores, convenience stores and mall jewelry stores. Georgia, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia are among those with Kroger stores carrying the Kroger name.

Kroger is one of several grocery stores that uses a loyalty card.
