The Land of Mists - although a Challenger story centre more on his daughter Enid and her colleague. Heavily influenced by Doyles growing belief in Spiritulalism the story reads as rather weak and is affected by the passage of time more than any other Challenger adventure. The focus on Spiritualsim does not lend itself to an exciting narrative- instead becoming preachy and rather dull. Indeed the novella were it to be visited by Doyles more famous creation - Holmes would have been much shorter as the mind of Holmes would have torn to shreds the occult mumbo jumbo nonsense that permeates the story. Placed in its historical context the Land of Mists sits rather dissapointingly as Doyles least exciting and indeed least succesful attempt at fiction.
