Encyclopedia > The Last Command (film)

The Last Command is a 1928 film. It was written by John F. Goodrich and Herman J. Mankiewicz, from a story by Lajos Biró. It was directed by Josef von Sternberg.

The plot concerns a down-on-his-luck former Tsarist Russian soldier (Emil Jannings) whose life is saved when an old adversary, now a movie director (William Powell), hires him to re-create the Russian Revolution that destroyed his career.

Jannings won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance.

The Films of Josef von Sternberg (4412 words)
It shares the word "Last" in its title with Murnau's film, and the plot of a man whose self esteem comes from wearing a fancy uniform, and being broken in spirit when he is forced to give it up.
Such works are the models for the later films of Mizoguchi Kenji and Max Ophuls, and the fountainheads of their style.
His men in earlier films are often in officer's uniforms, clothes that suggest the last degree of refinement.
