The overall feeling on this album is one of eeriness. One could also liken the experience to wandering into a snowy forest. Many are quick to compare the music of Agalloch to that Opeth — mostly basing their comparaisons on The Mantle — although both bands have few sonic similarities with each other, Opeth being closer to melodic death metal/black metal and Agalloch chosing the experimental doom / folk / forest genre. Considered mellower than Agalloch's first full-length, Pale Folklore, The Mantle still contains heavy electric guitar riffs, as well as acoustic guitar parts which are highly responsible for the doomy atmosphere. Quite preeminent as well are long and melancolic cello sequences such as on the instrumental track "The Lodge".
