Encyclopedia > The Menace from Earth

The Menace From Earth is a science fiction short story by Robert A. Heinlein.

The "menace" of the title is a beautiful woman who seems bent on stealing Jeff away from Holly, a girl student and aspiring starship designer whose hobby is flying in a great cavern in the Moon. This one of the author's few stories from a female perspective.

Storer-Gulls Wings by Robert Heinlein from The Menace From Earth
Holly was born on the Moon; her hobbies are designing star-ships and flying in a natural cavern called "Bats' Cave", Luna City's air reservoir.
Just as people on Earth use water reservoirs for recreation, so the people of Luna use the Bat's Cave for recreational flying, using specially designed bat's wings.

As directed by Roger Christian (a set decorator-turned director who did second-unit direction for "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace"), "Battlefield Earth" is a third-rate sci-fi flick, full of laughable moments: scene transitions are signified by a cheap-looking, video-style "wipe" of the screen.
And Psychlo aliens use such extraterrestrial turns of phrase as "Have you blown a head gasket?" The whole thing culminates with a sort of "James Bond"-derived storming of the fortress battle, full of shattering glass, explosions, laser fire and grunting Psychlos.
But "Battlefield Earth" saves its scariest moment for the end: a virtual guarantee that there will be a sequel.
