The film was directed by Anthony Asquith and was based on a play by George Bernard Shaw. Sellers plays an Indian doctor who meets an intitially cold rich heiress (Loren) who must marry to satisfy conditions of her father's will. Anthony Asquith (November 9, 1902)-(February 20, 1968) was a British film director. ... The film was a huge hit at the time of its release mostly because audiences enjoyed the beauty of Sophia Loren and the charisma of Peter Sellers who were huge stars of the time. The film could be said to launch the international career of Sellers, and allowed him to take more challenging roles such as his leads in Dr Strangelove. In recent years the reputation of The Millionairess has somewhat waned and it is no longer considered the classic it used to be, although it is still enjoyed by fans of the two lead actors. Also of note is that the film contains the song Goodness Gracious Me, which was a duet between Sellers and Loren. The song was released as a single shortly after the film was released and it became a successful chart hit. The song also gave it's name to Goodness Gracious Me: a successful UK Sitcom in the late 1990s. The Millionairess was one of Shaw's final plays, written when he was 79, but still contains sparkling comedy that is almost in Noël Coward mode.
This is particularly the case when the hideously self-possessed heroine finally almost meets her match in a penniless Indian doctor, the part made famous on film by Peter Sellers and here rendered very effectively by future Dr Who, Tom Baker.
The pleasure of The Millionairess lies in Maggie Smith's superb acting as the arch heroine who is used to getting her way and running over those who get in her way.
