Overview

After the original British series won two Golden Globes, a U.S. version of The Office was created by NBC. Though it retains the same title, the U.S. version of the show is set in Scranton, Pennsylvania, selected for its "sleepy small city" atmosphere. NBC has described it as a faster-paced version of the original; Ricky Gervais jokingly said before the premiere that it would probably have actors with better teeth. Creators Gervais and Stephen Merchant have production credits on the new show, but they were not initially otherwise involved. Trivia

  • In the kitchen of the Dunder Mifflin office there is a black no-smoking sign displaying the text Sec 6404.5. The Office takes place in Scranton, Pennsylvania, yet there is no s. 6404.5 in any Pennsylvania statute. There is, however, a s. 6404.5 in the Labor Code of California, the state in which the program is filmed, that restricts smoking in the workplace.[4]
  • In the opening scene, Jim is highlighting a California Municipal code form of Sec 12.22.C which pertains to the height of fences in front yards.[citation needed]
  • Dwight has a Froggy-101 bumper sticker on his office cabinets. In reality, Froggy-101 is a country-western radio station in Scranton.[5]
  • Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak have mentioned that, although the episodes are heavily scripted, Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson improvise at the end of many takes. Also, Kaling jokingly comments that Carell often causes her to ruin takes by making her laugh and that he tries to be less funny to get through the takes.[citation needed]
  • Producer Kent Zborkak comments about the set: "During the first season, we worked in an actual office space. For the second season, we went onto a soundstage--Chandler Studios in Van Nuys [in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley]--that replicates the environment of the first season."[6]
  • Phyllis Smith, who plays Phyllis Lapin on the show, is a casting director in real life. She was working as a casting associate on the show when the pilot's director, Ken Kwapis, had her read the scripts with the actors. He took such a liking to how she read that he had her join the cast.[7]
  • Before production began on the series, the shots of Scranton, Pennsylvania in the opening credits were actually filmed by John Krasinski and two of his friends. They filmed the footage from their jeep with the camera outside the sunroof.[8]
  • Angela Kinsey originally auditioned for the role of Pam. After her auditions, the producers thought she was "too feisty for Pam." They later called her back for the part of Angela Martin, which she won.[9]
  • Long before The Office, stars John Krasinski and B.J. Novak both attended Newton South High School in Newton, Massachusetts. Novak even wrote the first play in which Krasinski performed.[10]
  • Rainn Wilson based Dwight's hairstyle on his own style he had when he was sixteen.[11].
  • Steve Carell had only seen about half of the original pilot episode of the British series before he auditioned. He didn't continue watching for fear that he would start copying Ricky Gervais' characterizations.[12] Rainn Wilson, however, had watched every episode of the series before he auditioned.[13]
  • There is a Homer Simpson stuffed doll that is featured in the background of the office in almost every show. Office executive producer and writer Greg Daniels wrote and produced for The Simpsons series from 1994-96.
