Joey is crushed to learn that his co-hosting job at the telethon is just answering phones off-camera. Still on a quest to perform a selfless good deed, Phoebe makes a pledge to PBS, even though she still hates the station and therefore gets no pleasure out of it. But as she's basking in her glory, her contribution manages to get Joey on TV, making her feel good and thus becoming a selfish deed. Chandler manages to win Monica back by saying that the only reason he was good was because of her. They continue their secret affair, even sleeping together in a storage closet at Central Perk. Unable to leave his son Ben behind, Ross manages to convince Emily to come to New York. However, Emily has a severe stipulation: Ross cannot see Rachel anymore. Ross tells everyone except Rachel about Emily's demand, and they are unable to help.
