The Oxford Student has previously won the Student Newspaper of the Year at the Guardian Student Media Awards, and in 2004 it gained considerable publicity when two reporters broke University rules to expose security flaws in the University's computer network; the student journalists responsible, Patrick Foster and Roger Waite, were rusticated by the university's Court of Summary Jurisdiction, but on appeal their punishment was reduced to a fine. The paper has been prolific in its investigative journalism: in 2006 it broke the story of University mismanagement of a half-million pound redevelopment,[1] a story that was subsequently taken up by Oxfordshire's commercial papers, The Oxford Times[2] and The Oxford Mail[3].
