Encyclopedia > The Pas

The Pas is a town in Manitoba, Canada, located at 54 N 101 W, some 630 km north of the provincial capital, Winnipeg.

Known as the "Gateway to the North," The Pas is a multi-industry northern Manitoba town serving a district population of over 15 000. The main components of the region's diversified economy are agriculture, forestry, commercial fishing, tourism, transportation, and services (especially health and education). The Pas contains one of the two main campuses of the University College of the North.

History

The area's original inhabitants were the Cree, who migrated from the southeastern prairies 5000 years ago. "The Pas" is a derivative of the Cree word "pasquia" meaning "wooded narrows".

The first European to travel through the area was Henry Kelsey, an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company who travelled through the area on his way to the Canadian prairies sometime between 1690 - 1692. The Town of The Pas was incorporated in 1912.

The area today is composed of three distinct communities: The Town of The Pas, the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, and the Rural Municipality of Kelsey.

The PA system is controlled from a mixer which blends the incoming signals from microphones and musical instruments, modifies the tone, and controls the overall level of the signal that is sent to the amplifier.
All PA systems have a potential for feedback, which occurs when sound from the speakers returns to the microphone and is then re-amplified and sent through the speakers again.
PA speakers have been made lighter by using neodynium speaker magnets, and horns are often wired using fuses or other circuitry that protect the horn from damage if feedback occurs.
General Information (1828 words)
Because of the close working relationship PAs have with physicians, PAs are educated in a medical model designed to complement physician training.  PA students are taught, as are medical students, to diagnose and treat medical problems.
A PA's education doesn't stop after graduation, though.  PAs are required to take ongoing continuing medical education classes and be retested on their clinical skills on a regular basis.  A number of postgraduate PA programs have also been established to provide practicing PAs with advanced education in medical specialties.
The relationship between a PA and the supervising physician is one of mutual trust and respect.
