Encyclopedia > The Prayer of Jabez

The Prayer of Jabez : Breaking Through to the Blessed Life is an inspirational book published in 2000 by Bruce Wilkinson as the first book in the "BreakThrough" book series. It is based on the passage 1 Chronicles 4:9-10: Year 2000 (MM) was a leap year starting on Saturday (link will display full 2000 Gregorian calendar). ... Dr. Bruce Wilkinson is a well known Christian teacher and book writer. ... (Redirected from 1 Chronicles) The Book of Chronicles is a book in the Hebrew Bible (also see Old Testament). ...

And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" So God granted him what he requested. (NKJV)

In the book, Wilkinson encourages Christians to invoke this prayer for themselves on a daily basis:

I challenge you to make the Jabez prayer for blessing part of the daily fabric of your life. To do that, I encourage you to follow unwaveringly the plan outlined here for the next thirty days. By the end of that time, you'll be noticing significant changes in your life, and the prayer will be on its way to becoming a treasured, lifelong habit.

The book became an international bestseller, topping the New York Times bestseller list and selling nine million copies. It received the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Gold Medallion Book of the Year award in 2001. Derivative works

The popularity of the original book has led its publisher, Multnomah Press, to extend the line to a number of derivative works targeted at niche audiences, as well as to offer the books in audio and video formats. They also authorized a wide array of official "Prayer of Jabez" merchandise including key chains, mugs, backpacks, Christmas ornaments, scented candles, mouse pads, and a framed artist's conception of Jabez himself ([1]). A line of jewelry was introduced in 2002 ([2]). Also see: 2002 (number). ...

Criticism

Jabez has been compared to the "prosperity gospel" and has received the reproaches often addressed toward that doctrine, e.g. that the Jabez prayer suggests that God ought to do what man wants, instead of man following God's will. Some have taken issue with the form of the prayer, citing Jesus' admonition against "vain repetitions" in Matthew 6:7-9. The commercialization of Jabez has also attracted criticism. There is a disputed proposal that this article should be merged with Full Gospel The Word of Faith movement or word-faith theology developed in the latter half of the 20th century in mainly Pentecostal and Charismatic churches. ... The Gospel of Matthew (literally, according to Matthew; Greek, Κατά Μαθθαίον or Κατά Ματθαίον, Kata Maththaion or Kata Matthaion) is a synoptic gospel in the New Testament, one of four canonical gospels. ...

The Prayer of Jabez (1773 words)
Jabez understands that the expansion of his spiritual territory is not to be a solo effort.
Jabez did not see himself as a spiritual giant, but rather, he saw himself as someone who desperately needed the hand of God to lead him every step of the way.
Even though Jabez predates the Incarnation of Jesus, the principle of Jabez’s prayer that we must seek to emulate is the principle of praying in Jesus’ name.
Prayer of Jabez, Wilkinson, Review (761 words)
The most salutary aspect of The Prayer of Jabez is that by encouraging the individual Christian to pray for himself the prayer of Jabez found in 1 Chronicles 4:20, Wilkinson is advocating the praying of Scripture.
The prayer from Scripture this person needs to pray is not the prayer of Jabez, but rather something like the one by the man in Luke 18:13, "God, be merciful to me, the sinner." And from everything I have previously heard and read from Dr. Wilkinson, I am confident he would agree with this.
If we pray the prayer of Jabez but omit the spirit of this emphasis we may find ourselves on the short end of, "You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures" (James 4:3).
