Hardy is a solid pessimist. Like Sophocles the Greek writer , He believes that we are guided by the stick of gods and deities. He is one of those who believe that : " Happiness is an occasional episode in the general drama of pain '. This is what he shows in The Return Of The Native'. Essentially atragic writer , he decides to put forth his best efforts in this novel . The story begins with Thomasin , the niece of Mrs. Yoebright . Thomasin has fallen a prey to the lust of Wildeve , a lusty bachelor. He owns an inn. They try to marry , but cannot , because of the wicked plans of Wildeve himself .In this failure , the reddleman [ Diggory Venn ] fully devotes himself to 'the little woman ' to help her out of clutches . Mrs.Yoebright , a widow is a hard-boiled mother and a widow understans the wicked movements shown by Wildeve. This is the reason that she is not ready to allow her neice to marry him. On the other hand there is no effect on Wildeve.

As the story moves , we come to know the love-affair between two shallow persons ,i.e Eustacia and Wildeve. Eustacia is not a native of Edgon Heath , the framework of the novel . The Return of the Native was a highly controversial novel. Originally in five books, to mirror the classical tragic format, Hardy was forced to add a sixth, "Aftercourses", to ensure a happy ending, submitting to the Victorian public.

It is a truly modern novel in many ways, presenting questions about society, especially considering failure and ambition as themes, despite its Victorian style of prose.
