Encyclopedia > The Secret of Chimneys

The Secret of Chimneys is a detective novel written by Agatha Christie in 1925. Christie used the Chimneys mansion, along with some of the characters in this book in a later mystery called The Seven Dials Mystery. Superintendent Battle is also included in several other mysteries by Christie as well.

Anthony Cade is working in Africa, where he is approached by an old friend, Jimmy McGrath. McGrath wants Cade to deliver the memoirs of a Count Stylptitch to a publishing company in London, for which he would be paid. Also, McGrath obtained letters written by a Virginia Revel, which were written at Chimneys, for which she was being blackmailed. McGrath asked Cade to return these letters to Mrs. Revel. When he gets to London, Cade discovers that many people want to get their hands on the memoirs, but he sees no connection to Mrs. Revel until one man who tried to steal the memoirs from Cade is found murdered in Mrs. Revel's home. The mystery behind the memoirs and the murder lead Cade and Revel back to Chimneys, where, to their surprise, another murder occurs.
