Background

Located centrally within the Canal District of the Human city of Stormwind, The Stockade is an underground penitentiary complex that serves as a medium-low level instance dungeon for the Alliance. Whatever its initial purpose or state, in its current form the Stormwind authorities in charge of the Stockade, namely Warden Thelwater, have lost control, and The Stockade is under a state of riot where prisoners roam freely throughout. Numerous enemies of Stormwind and the Alliance reside within, and many of the central quests involving The Stockade involves dealing with these enemies. The reason for the uprising in The Stockade is because of the numerous defias that were thrown in and overcrowded The Stockade. Fortunately, the remaining Stockade guards have managed to barricade the Stockade's only exit, preventing any of the criminals from escaping into Stormwind and allowing any brave adventurers willing to quell the riot to enter. Due to the location of this instance being in the middle of the Alliance capital city of Stormwind, it is highly unlikely any Horde players will run this instance. Nomenclature

There are no common shortforms for The Stockade. It should be noted, however, that shortforms are highly variable, and two of the more common abbreviations is the "stocks" and "SDes", though many players may abbreviate the name as they wish.

Notable is the persistent misnomer The Stockades. Many players can play for months without ever hearing this instance referred to correctly by other players.

Instance zone

The Stockade is among the shortest of all the available instance dungeons available in World of Warcraft, and is suitable for players roughly level twenty-five and above. It is comprised of one central hallway which splits into two separate areas at its end. Throughout the hallway are numerous side rooms which hold numerous mobs. In addition, mobs are populated within the halls, and patrols regularly move throughout. The Stockade has only one entry point which is used as both the entrance and the exit point. In MMORPGs, an instance dungeon is a special area, typically a dungeon, that generates a new copy, or instance, for each group that enters the area. ... World of Warcraft (commonly abbreviated as WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Blizzard Entertainment. ...

The enemies encountered in The Stockade are primarily comprised of imprisoned humans from the Defias Brotherhood, but can include other races as well (for instance, ogres). While most of the enemies encountered are melee combatants, players should be prepared for other kinds of enemies when confronting the bosses. In particular, Fear spells are used by some of the bosses/named enemies and can be particularly deadly due to the small size of this dungeon, and it is usually recommended more so then normal that the area around and leading to a Boss be cleared before engaging him.

Also, occasional swarms of level 20 Defias prisoners appear outside the entrance to the instance. Normally they are dispatched by the much higher level 45 guards bordering the stairs to the entrance. However standing right at the portal is not a wise move.

Quests

Six quests are involved in The Stockade instance. They are:
What Comes Around... (level 25)
The Color of Blood (level 26)
Crime and Punishment (level 26)
Quell The Uprising (level 26)
The Fury Runs Deep (level 27)
The Stockade Riots (level 29)

While it is possible to finish each quest individually without engaging other quests, it is usually the case that parties engage as many quests as possible. However due to a pre-requisite quest for The Fury Runs Deep, it is likely that parties lacking higher level members start with the three quests What Comes Around..., The Color of Blood, and possibly Quell the Uprising, as they can all be accomplished without approaching either of the two major bosses (Dextren Ward and Bazil Thredd). The Stockade is thus returned upon at a higher level (typically 27 to 29) in order to finish the two remaining quests.

What Comes Around... and The Color of Blood can be accomplished simply by "farming" the central hallway.

The following is a list of the six quests, the briefing text of each quest, and an outline of strategy dealing with each quest.

What Comes Around...

Objective: Bring the head of Targorr the Dread to Guard Berton in Lakeshire.

Briefing:

Targorr the Dread served under Gath'Ilzogg as supreme Executioner. His methods were ruthless, even by filthy Orc standards. Men who fought bravely to defend the Kingdom were tortured on his whim. Now he is being held in the Stormwind Stockade, sentenced to die. Yet something is amiss. One of the bureaucratic nobles put a hold on his execution. I am sure foul play is in the works.

Put an end to Targorr the Dread, <name>. Travel to The Stockade and behead him before trickery is upon us.

Strategy

Targorr the Dread is a level 24 elite mob. His location is the first room on the right just as you enter the instance. However Targorr can also appear in the second room on the left as well as the Northern room. Typically speaking, two guards must be defeated before the path to Targor's room is free. Targorr is surrounded by 3 guards, though two of the guards are outside of his aggressive range. Thus it is possible to "pull" the two mobs first before engaging Targorr.

The third guard is stationed near to Targorr, so it is not possible to engage it without attracting Targorr's attention. Consequently both mobs need to be engaged simultaneously. Strategies to approach this battle include disabling the guard (either by sapping or putting it to sleep), or one may approach both mobs simultaneously.

If Targorr is in the Northern room it is possible to "pull" him without engaging the two guards in the back.

Targorr does not flee. Instead he 'becomes enraged', attacking with more power when his health is low.

The Color of Blood

Objective: Nikova Raskol of Stormwind wants you to collect 10 Red Wool Bandanas.

Briefing:

Bitterness flows through my veins like a cold river. My grandson, Mac, was such a good boy. A mere 14 years old. When the army was sent off to the front, Mac took up arms to defend the city. He was a guard in The Stockade, where the Defias gang is locked up. Mac reprimanded some of the prisoners for tearing their wool blankets to make scarves, a symbol of their gang. For that Mac was stabbed in the back.

I want revenge. Bring me 10 of their precious Wool Bandanas. They are the color of blood.

Strategy

This is a collection quest. The mobs that drop "Red Wool Bandanas" are all the elite Defias guards patrolling the instance. It is usually possible for a five man group to finish this collection quest upon clearing the instance, but it is not a guarantee.

Crime and Punishment

Objective: Councilman Millstipe of Darkshire wants you to bring him the hand of Dextren Ward.

Briefing:

As if the neglect for the residents of Duskwood was not bad enough, now the House of Nobles spits in the eye of the Darkshire Council with their decision to imprison Dextren Ward in Stormwind rather than behead the villain as per Lord Ebonlocke's sentence.

Ward was caught selling bodies from the cemetery to Morbent Fel, a crime punishable by death. Yet Stormwind claims Ward as their prisoner.

Assassinate Ward in The Stormwind Stockade - bring me his hand - and I shall reward you.

Strategy

Dextren Ward is located at the West (or left) end of the instance. Along the way is a similar path branching into four side rooms. The side rooms are optional, but they are often cleared in order to accomplish the quest Quell the Uprising. Both the left and right side branch off into a large room with three smaller rooms branching towards the north, south, and east/west, depending on the direction you are headed.

Dextren Ward is located in the northern room on the left end. He stands relatively near the entrance of the doorway. The room just prior to Dextren Ward is guarded by four Defias elites.

Dextren walks back and forth in the room, pausing to stand for several minutes. There is a guard right by the door.

Dextren will flee when his health is low. Consequently it is important to keep him away from any of the nearby rooms in order to prevent additional guards from engaging the party.

Quell The Uprising

Objective: Warden Thelwater of Stormwind wants you to kill 10 Defias Prisoners, 8 Defias Convicts, and 8 Defias Insurgents in The Stockade.

Briefing:

The uprising must be quelled! I need your assistance. If word gets out that the prison is overrun I will lose my job! This is a case of foul play if I've ever seen one. But what's important now is forcing these prisoners into submission for the safety of Stormwind.

The punishment for insurgency is death. Kill some of these deviants! That ought to get things under control.

Strategy

In order to successfully accomplish this quest, it is often the strategy (though not necessary) to clear out all of the side rooms.

The Fury Runs Deep

Objective: Motley Garmason wants Kam Deepfury's head brought to him at Dun Modr.

Briefing:

You have proven your loyalty to King Magni, <class>. And your hatred for the Dark Iron scum is as great as my own.

There is a task I wish to complete myself but I am bound by honor to stay with Longbraid. But Roggo has gathered intelligence that proves Kam Deepfury was a conspirator in the attack on the Thandol Span. It was by Deepfury's planning that Longbraid lost his kin.

Deepfury is being held for political reasons in the Stormwind Stockade. I want him dead, <name>. For Longbraid! Bring me his head!

Strategy

(note: this quest is given by Motley Garmason after you finish the quest The Dark Iron War. Since the quest is marked as 30 elite, typically groups do not approach this quest until their second time in The Stockade)

Kam Deepfury resides in the right side of the instance. His exact location is the second room to the left. Kam stands in the middle of the room, within range of a Defias guard. When Kam's health is low, he will flee, potentially attracting the attention of other guards. Consequently it is most safe if the group were to "pull" Kam outside the room and fight him in the hallway after clearing the first two rooms of the right hallway.

Kam has a shield bash attack which knocks down the player targeted.

The Stockade Riots

Objective: Kill Bazil Thredd and bring his head back to Warden Thelwater at the Stockade.

Briefing:

Let's get one thing straight, <name>: I don't trust you. But, with the situation as it is, you probably won't make a difference.

So here's how it's going to be: go down there and have your talk with Thredd. If you're really on our side, then kill him and bring me his head when the job's done. And if it turns out you're on his side, and don't come out... when we find you, you'll die along with the rest of the maggots.

Strategy

Bazil Thredd resides in the far East (Right) end. Again, a hallway with four side rooms awaits the party. The difference between the left and the right side is that the East end is guarded by an Ogre called Hamlock and two guards. Hamlock can be sapped, and it is easier to sap Hamlock and deal with the two guards than to sap a guard and deal with Hamlock. It is also easier to "pull" the three mobs into the hallway than to fight in the room, though with proper control, either method is equally effective.

Bazil Thredd stands in the center of the room to the far East. He is guarded by two Defias guards, but tends to wander around. Thus it is possible to engage the two guards without attracting Bazil Thredd's attention.

When Bazil Thredd is low on health he will flee. Thus it is a good idea to clear the two rooms to the side prior to engaging him.
