The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle is a biographicalmusical comedy starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Edna May Oliver and Walter Brennan. The 1939 movie is based on the stories "My Husband" and "My Memories of Vernon Castle", by Irene Castle. The movie was adapted by Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Yost and Richard Sherman. The film was directed by H.C. Potter. Irene Castle acted as advisor to this film, and constantly disagreed with the director as to details of costuming and liberties taken with their lives. She scored one direct hit though: when informed that white actor Walter Brennan was to play their faithful servant Walter, she was dumbfounded- the real Walter was Black. Vernon and IreneCastle were a husband-and-wife team of ballroom dancers of the early 20th century.
IreneCastle (April 17, 1893 - January 25, 1969) was born Irene Foote in New Rochelle, New York.
Vernon served as a pilot during World War I, and shortly after the war, died in an airplane crash near Fort Worth, Texas (where he was an airplane flight instructor) in 1918.
Vernon and IreneCastle, a husband and wife dance team, were a true sensation of the American vaudeville circuit in the years immediately prior to World War I, but their career was cut short by Vernon's death in the war.
Vernon and Irene meet, fall in love, become a dance team, and take the world, or at least the civilized part of it, by storm.
IreneCastle, who served as story consultant, had many clashes with Ginger (unsurprisingly) over clothes, hair length, etc. Her presence also probably helped keep the story wholesome and dignified, although apparently the Castles were more rambunctious than either Fred or Ginger.
