Plot summary The plot of The Subtle Knife is dense with details and both builds and unfolds at a fairly fast pace. In general, several new characters are introduced, including Sir Charles Latrom, who is actually Lord Boreal, from Lyra's world, and an associate of her mother's, and a physicist called Mary Malone, who studies dark matter, or what she calls "Shadows." Additional characters, each important to the overall plot, include Will's father John Parry, a mysterious scientist named Stanislaus Grumman, and returning favourites such as Lee Scoresbey the Aeronaut and Iorek Byrnison, the Bear King. But the most intriguing addition of all, almost a protagonist in its own right, is the Subtle Knife itself. This "Subtle" knife has two sides; one which can cut through any known matter, and one which can cut into different worlds. Fashioned by a guild of alchemists, the Subtle Knife is like a worm-hole maker in the shape of a blade, an ordinary looking knife that can cut through the fabric of space-time and open windows between worlds. The knife is part of Will and Lyra's ultimate destiny, which is merely suggested in the second novel and is not fully realised until the third. The war against heaven continues to escalate in this novel, and familiar Christian doctrines meet physics and metaphysics in unconventional ways. Shades of Milton predominate the plotline that follows Lord Asriel's subterfuge against "the Authority" (God), and Mrs. Coulter reaches true demonic dimensions at the close of the book. As the story ends it's not clear how Dust, or dark matter, the functions of the universe and the Subtle Knife are related, and though separated for now, Will and Lyra will continue their quest to understand.
