The strongest tribes rose up against Hakkar and his followers, and a terrible war ensued. The budding empire was devastated by the magic unleashed by the angry god and his rebel children. However, the trolls succeeded in destroying Hakkar's physical manifestation and banishing his followers -- the Atal'ai -- from their kingdom. The Atal'ai were forced into the uncharted Swamp of Sorrows to the north. There, they built a great temple to their fallen god -- Atal'Hakkar -- where they could continue to do their master's work. However, Ysera of the Green Dragonflight discovered their plans and smashed the temple beneath the waves where it remains to this day partially submerged and guarded by green dragonkin. In the World of Warcraft the descendants of the Atal'ai led by the Prophet Jammal'an is attempting to resurrect the God and is responsible for the summoning.
Instance zone The temple can be roughly divided into two parts: Lower Temple and Upper Temple. - The Lower Temple surrounds a mysterious chamber with a stone circle. It is up to the adventures to discover the secrets of the room.
- The Upper Temple houses the prophet, the summoning room (for Hakkar), and the dream projection of a mighty dragon, Eranikus.
Many players will skip the Lower Temple since one does not need to solve the secrets on the Lower Temple to advance to the Upper Temple. Also, completing both the Lower and the Upper Temples takes about 5 hours which is another reason why most players skip the Lower Temple. Navigation inside the Temple can be tricky for first timers and even afterwards, the Temple's layout is somewhat confusing. Certain fights require a progression of steps before they can be attempted. For example, the Prophet Jammal'man can only be accessed by first killing several troll sub-bosses who are channeling a shield around the Prophet's room. Also, before Eranikus can be attempted, several smaller dragons must be dealt with, or Eranikus will summon them to him all at once, spelling certain death for the party. Eranikus drops a trinket which spits out a poisoned cloud around the caster. There is an optional boss that can be completed with the quest "The God Hakkar". Here, one must prevent them from summoning him. In the World of Warcraft the trolls fail to summon Hakkar in the temple. However, in the 20-man raid instance Zul'Gurub, he is successfully summoned.
