Believing Panama is still corrupt after General Noriega’s reign and as the Americans have given the Panama Canal back to Panama, if he can find out where the true balance of power surrounding the canal is, London will want him back. His informant is a tailor, Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush) whose wife, Louisa (Jamie Lee Curtis) is the assistant to the Canal director. Harry is in need of money and doesn’t have the business sense to ask his customers for the money to pay for their suits. Osnard asks Harry to spy on his wife to find out what the President plans on doing with the canal, and his economic anguish will vanish. Pendel agrees and is spinning stories to keep the money flowing. Osnard is so set on finding a way out of Panama that he is blind to the fact that Pendel is lying.[citation needed] Geoffrey Roy Rush (born 6 July 1951) is an Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning Australian actor. ... Differences from the Novel

There are many differences between the novel and the film, most significant being the issue of the Canal. The novel is set in the mid-1990's prior to the hand-over of the Canal to the Panamanian Government from the United States. In the film, this has already happened and the plot is changed to reflect that. In addition to the difference there is also significantly more character development in each of the characters, though specifically Osnard, Pendel, and Mickie. Much more is known about Pendel's past and his relationships with Marta and Mickie. The background of Andrew "Andy" Osnard is also changed. In the film he is seen as a semi-washed up foreign services officer who is given a posting in Panama so he will not be able to cause any trouble and so that he may redeem himself in some way. In the novel he is seen as a younger man who is hoping for that big break which will get him the posting of his choice. He sees Pendel as this big break.

DVD Review: Tailor Of Panama (1173 words)
Talk about typecasting; director John Boorman's "Tailor Of Panama" had many going in thinking they were going to see Pierce Brosnan in some sort of "indie-Bond" picture.
The tailor tells everyone that he's one half of a famed clothing company, but it's simply all a sheld covering up the man's past; that he did a stint in prison and may have other details about the politics in the region.
Final Thoughts: "Tailor of Panama" doesn't always work in terms of story, but I enjoyed it simply as a showcase for two great actors obviously enjoying their roles.
The Tailor of Panama (719 words)
Tailor is about a down and out British spy, Andy Osnard, sent to Panama to think about his sins—rather vaguely alluded to, but it seems he has helped some wives--not his own--go astray.
Neither of them seem to care whether the tailor considers a little old thing called truth—a commodity which seems to be in short supply or demand in Panama, or at least, this film’s version of Panama.
Pendel, the tailor, carries a heavy load of emotional baggage and secrets, given weird life by quick glimpses of playwright Harold Pinter as—gee, if I even tell you whom he is playing, I would be giving away something you need to find out for yourself.
