Four people - Olga, Masha, Irina and Andrey Prozorov (sisters and brother)- are left stranded in a provincial backwater after the death of their father, an army general. The play begins on the first anniversary of their father's death, also Irina's name-day. It follows with a party. At this Andrey tells his feelings to Natasha.
