"The Trooper" is a song written by Iron Maiden bass player Steve Harris. It is Iron Maiden's ninth single, and the second from their 1983 album Piece of Mind. The single was released on June 20, 1983. The song is about the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 during the Crimean War, and is at least partially based upon Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade". The song is a perhaps bleaker vision of this poem, taking the viewpoint of one of the slain troopers. Trooper recently had a chance to visit with good friend Joan Roue, great granddaughter of the designer of Canada's famous Bluenose schooner, and tour the Dayspring, NS site where the new Bluenose IV will be built.
Trooper are on their way home for a brief break after almost two weeks in Ontario which were highlighted by some excellent and loving audiences, the Stanley Cup game and gig, and - squeezed into an already ridiculous schedule - Ra's involvement with the CBC Seven Wonders of Canada project.
Trooper (and extended families) are happy, healthy, and enjoying their brief and well-deserved winter hiatus.
