Encyclopedia > The Trump Building

40 Wall Street is a 71-story skyscraper in New York City completed in 1930. It is also known as the Trump Building (which adorns the building currently) after a 1996 renovation by Donald Trump who had bought the building. It was first known as Bank of Manhattan Trust Building when it was first finished, however. Its pinnacle reaches 927 ft (282.5m) and was very briefly the tallest building in the world, soon surpassed by the Chrysler Building finished that same year.

The architects were H. Craig Severance and Yasuo Matsui.

It was hit by a US Coast Guard airplane in 1946 during a fog. The crash killed four people.

The building, originally constructed in 1929 and now fronted with bold, gold lettering declaring it "The Trump Building," is a far cry from the structure it was six years ago when brokers and market watchers claimed it could never be profitable.
Trump emphasized that he is under no pressure to sell the building and won't do so for less than the "right price." He said recent rumors that he was selling the property to raise cash for his casinos are totally false.
Trump said many investors were burned in the technology blowup a few years ago when they saw paper profits turn to ashes.

The Chase building also had a very large plaza with a nice Dubuffet sculpture and it would soon be followed by the very elegant fl tower known as 140 Broadway, whose plaza was adorned by a great Noguchi modern sculpture of a red cube perforated by a cylindrical space.
The building would be owned by Webb and Knapp (the real estate firm formed by Eliot Cross), the Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos (in the 1980s), and, most recently, Donald Trump, who renamed the building after himself.
The building briefly held the world's tallest title until it was eclipsed by the Chrysler Building's spire.
