The Wedge

The Wedge is a surf spot located at the extreme east end of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. When supplied with a south swell of the proper size and direction, it can produce shorebreak waves as spectacular, challenging, intimidating, dangerous, - and worthy of cautious respect - as any in Hawaii, Tahiti, or Australia.

These enormous waves are a by-product of improvements to the groins at the Newport Harbor entrance undertaken during the 1930s. As an incoming wave approaches from outside, it washes up against the groin and washes back down, causing a "side wave" that connects with another incoming wave to form a peak. A waterperson in peak physical condition, with an awful lot of experience bodysurfing, bodyboarding, or kneeboarding here, is promised a short, but very fast and exciting, ride.

The Wedge is also the title of an unrelated 1944 poem by William Carlos Williams.

The Wedge is also the title of an hour-long, weekly alternative music program airing on MuchMusic in Canada. The program, which debutted in 1992 as a daily series, was originally hosted by Simon Evans. In 1995, Sook-Yin Lee became host, and remained with the program until her departure from MuchMusic in 2001. Since then, it has been hosted by a different band each week.

The Wedge is also a device used to pass a urinalysis test. The wedge is a specially designed container that the user fills with clean urine to pass a urinalysis test. The wedge goes between the butt cheeks, not inside, and has a hose to deliver the urine. Keeping The Wedge between the butt cheeks keeps it at proper temperature until it is ready to be discreetly delivered.

Government and Community - WEDG Housing Committee (1732 words)
WEDG and MAHP applied for and received $443,000 from the federal government for home purchase buy downs and $208,000 from the state government to help purchase the land for the WHI.
WEDG Staff and the Housing Committee volunteers were instrumental in coordinating with other agencies the recovery efforts as a result of the May 15 Tornado and the June 29 Windstorm, which combined, destroyed at least 85 housing units in the County.
This funding was crucial to allowing WEDG and its staff person to have the available time to advance the many housing issues facing the community, especially with the two disasters that hit the community.
