The village of Thelwall contains two schools, the first is Thelwall Infant School which is aimed at children in Key Stages 0 (Reception) and 1 (Years 1 and 2). The second school is Thelwall Junior School which targets Key Stage 2, children between the ages of 7 and 11. The Junior School is considered primary education, and is a satellite school that feeds Lymm High School, the nearest secondary education institute. Thelwall's most difficult task was to prove that his various instances of "intemperate language" were merely accidental and momentary lapses, not the key signs pointing to hidden and conspiratorial motives of political subversion.
Thelwall protests against having "to answer at the bar of the Old Bailey for every intemperate expression" he may utter, or every "crude imagination" he may put on paper (Claeys 55), but oral and written texts are signs of subjective intention, and possibly the discourse of treason.
Thelwall inverts the treason charges in a chiasmus: from "The State charges Thelwall with treason" to "Thelwall charges the State with treason." Government is kept separate from the nation, so that he can demonize his persecutors without seeming to attack the nation's people.
