Theodoric of Freiburg was a German theologian and scientist.
He is reckoned to be the first to give a correct explanation of the rainbow, in his work De Iride (On the Rainbow). In the beginning of the 14th century, he experimented with spherical flasks filled with water to simulate water droplets. His theory was that the lightbeams were refracted when entering the atmospheric droplets, then reflected inside the droplets and finally refracted again when leaving them. Theodoric the Great, c.454–526, king of the Ostrogoths Ostrogoths (East Goths), division of the Goths, one of the most important groups of the Germans.
Theodoric was now master in Italy; because of his great power he was able to avoid Byzantine supervision and thus was more than a mere official.
Theodoric is the prototype for Dietrich von Bern in the German epic poem Nibelungenlied.
