Third Lanark Football Club (Third Lanark F.C.) is a Scottish football team that existed from 1872 to 1967 and were based in Glasgow. Third Lanark started as the football team for the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers. Known as 3 LRV the name was changed to Third Lanark AC when the official links with the military were severed. Third Lanark played at Cathkin Park. This was also known as Hampden Park before Queen's Park F.C. sold it to Third Lanark. The club was declared bankrupt in 1967. It is known that boardroom corruption played a role in this. The chairman of Thirds (whose name is not deserving of mention now or ever) wished to personally profit from the sale of Cathkin Park for property development. Over a five year period, this man deliberately set out to cripple the Hi-Hi in order to make this possible. The club was finally liquidated in 1967, however mercifully the chairman did not live long enough to exploit his betrayal and Cathkin still stands as a monument to a once-great football club. Many Third Lanark fans began supporting Pollok FC in the Scottish Junior Leagues, and most still do so to this day. However a youth team recently adopted the name Third Lanark Athletic, and are playing from Cathkin Park once more. One now can only sit back and dream of an eventual return to League ranks for the Hi-Hi, however distant it may be. A semi-professional Thirds could easily draw on a supporter base the equivalent of most 2nd and 3rd division clubs in Scotland, probably even more.
