It is the largest town in the district and is the commercial centre of the district. The town is being modernised with the help of a programme sponsored by the 'World Bank' which is financing the programme through the Government of Kerala. As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Thodupuzha had a population of 46,226. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Thodupuzha has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 81%. In Thodupuzha, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. Thodupuzha has a large population of the so called " Vella Pillai" who migrated from "Tenkshi" in Tamilnadu. The Vellal Pillai spread later on to different parts of Kerala and their main deity the symbol from Tenkashi is placed near Erattupetta and all Vellala Pillai people meet there once a year to mark the plight of them from Thenkashi. Thodupuzha also happens to be the place of "Vellala Pillai" population who migrated from Tenkashi in TamilaNadu. There are different stories behind their plight. The popular once says they were afraid of giving away one beautiful lady to a low caste king in Tenkashi.
