The airline was established on 1 September 1999 and started operations on 27 March 2000. It was created as JMC Airlines through the merger of Flying Colours Airlines and Caledonian Airways, following the integration of the Carlson Leisure group with Thomas Cook, which bought both airlines under common ownership in October 1999. Thomas Cook initially operated under the callsign 'Globe' however, the Spanish Air Traffic Controllers complained about the callsign, as they felt 'Globe' sounded similar to the Spanish word for condom and so the callsign was changed to Topjet.
Thomas Cook retained the format of JMC Airlines operating its fleet unchanged since the airline was formed.

On 5 July 1841, Thomas Cook arranged for the rail company to charge one shilling per person that included rail tickets and food for this train journey.
Cook was paid a share of the fares actually charged to the passengers, as the railway tickets, being legal contracts between company and passenger, could not have been issued at his own price.
The firm's growth was consolidated by John Mason Cook and his two sons, especially by its involvement with military transport and postal services for Britain and Egypt during the 1880s.
