The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department of the United States government responsible for energy policy and nuclear safety. ...

Founded in 1984, it is located in Newport News, Virginia. The main accelerator is a 7/8 mile accelerator tunnel consisting of 2 RF linear accelerators and 2 arc sections which contain steering magnets. As the electron particle beam makes successive orbits, up to 5, the energy is increased up to a maximum of 6 GeV. One of the distinguishing features of TJNAF is the continuous nature of the electron beam, with a bunch length of less than 1 picosecond. TJNAF was previously named the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) but was renamed in 1996. The accelerator is built 25 feet below the earth's surface and walls of the tunnel are 2 feet thick. TJNAF employs 675 people and more than 2,000 scientists from around the world conduct research using the facility. 1984 is a leap year starting on Sunday of the Gregorian calendar. ... The Nuclear Physics Program consists of 3 end stations:

  • Hall A
  • Hall B
  • Hall C

TJNAF also the world's most powerful Free Electron Laser at over 10 kilowatts. Power kilowatt (symbol: kW) is a unit for measuring power, equal to one thousand watts. ...

Upgrades

Currently there are plans to construct an additional end station, Hall D, as well as double the beam energy to 12 GeV. Wikipedia does not yet have an article with this exact name. ...
