Encyclopedia > Thomas Pingo

Thomas Pingo (1692-1776) was an Italian-born medallist and die engraver. He worked for the Royal Mint in London and was one of the founder members of the Royal Academy in 1768.

Born in Italy, Pingo settled in London in the 1740s. His subjects included Charles Edward Stuart (Bonny Prince Charlie) and George III. He was appointed Assistant Engraver at the Mint in 1771.

His English-born sons Lewis Pingo (1743-1840) and John Pingo also became noted medallists, Lewis succeeding his father as the Mint's Assistant Engraver in 1776.
