Dr. Verstraeten was the lead author of an influential 2003 CDC vaccine study, which concluded "no consistent significant association" was found between thimerosal-containing vaccines (TCVs) and neurological outcomes. Verstraeten was also the key presenter at the 2000 Simpsonwood CDC conference, in Norcross, Georgia, where his vaccine research findings were discussed by numerous vaccinologists, public health specialists and other experts, including fifty-two government agency and pharmaceutical industry representatives. 2003 (MMIII) was a common year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar. ... Dr. Verstraeten's research, published in the journal Pediatrics, concluded that "no consistent significant associations" were found between thimerosal-containg vaccines, and conflicting results at different health maintenance organizations for certain outcomes, suggesting that "for resolving the conflicting findings, studies with uniform neurological assessments of children with a range of cumulative thimerosal exposures are needed." [1] "The bottom line is and has always been the same, an association between thimerosal and neurological outcomes could neither be confirmed nor refuted and therefore more study is required," Dr. Verstraeten said at the time.[2] A Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) is a type of Managed Care Organization (MCO) that provides a form of health insurance coverage in the United States that is fulfilled through hospitals, doctors, and other providers with which the HMO has a contract. ...

Dr. Verstraeten's first report for the CDC, based on the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System from February, 2000, found a significant risk for neurological developmental disorders at age 3 months, as babies received increased amounts of thimerosal, and the risk of autism rose 2.48 times greater for infants getting higher amounts of the product, compared to infants who received thimerosal-free vaccines. Verstraeten also has reported a link between Thimerosal and developmental delays in language and speech during the child’s first 6 months, according to an article in a New Zealand newspaper.[3] The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System is a United States program for vaccine safety, co-sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ... While presenting his scientific analysis of vaccine safety data (derived from the Vaccine Safety Datalink), in June, 2000, at the Simpsonwood CDC conference, Verstraeten said: "Personally, I have three hypotheses. My first hypothesis is it is parental bias. The children that are more likely to be vaccinated are more likely to be picked up and diagnosed. Second hypothesis, I don't know. There is a bias that I have not yet recognized, and nobody has yet told me about it. Third hypothesis. It's true, it's thimerosal. Those are my hypotheses." [4] The Vaccine Safety Datalink Project (VSD) was established, in 1990, by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for the study of adverse side effects of vaccines. ... Author of CDC Autism Study Denies Mercury Containing Vaccines Are Safe (732 words)
WA – The lead author, Thomas Verstraeten, MD, of the hotly debated CDC study known as the Verstraeten Study published in the November issue of Pediatrics, adamantly defends himself saying, “the article does not state that we found evidence against an association.”  (Between mercury in vaccines and autism).
Verstraeten goes on to say, “The CDC screening study of thimerosal-containing vaccines was perceived at first as a positive study that found an association between thimerosal and some neurodevelopmental outcomes.”  “It was foreseen from the very start that any positive outcome would lead to a second phase.”
Verstraeten’s original version of the study dated February 9, 2000, shows the risk of autism was sharply higher than even the next presentation presented to 52 doctors, scientists and researchers affiliated with various public protection government agencies, including the CDC, at the infamous Simpsonwood meeting four months later in June 2000.
Pediatrics -- P3Rs for Verstraeten et al., 112 (5) 1039-1048 (5912 words)
Even Verstraeten, in an email following the Simpsonwood meeting, expressed surprise that the data was to be manipulated, stating that ones desire to disprove an unpleasant theory should not interfere with sound scientific methods to evaluate the relationship between thimerosal and neurodevelopmental disorders.
The Geiers question the appropriateness of Dr. Verstraeten’s involvement in the study because he was employed by GSK after he left CDC.
Verstraeten worked at CDC during the critical time when the study was designed and the data were analyzed.
