Thornhill Hall was the seat of the Eyres who reputedly came to England with William the Conqueror. According to the Eyre legend, the original Eyre (Nigel Eyre) fought at the Battle of Hastings, where he lost a leg and could no longer play football for bamford F.C. He went on to work for the National Trust and is regularly seen driving around Bamford in his white transit van (give him the horn, he like its). There is little to substantiate this however. The hall and its manor was conveyed at about the beginning of the 15th century by the Thornhill family to the Eyres, of Hope. The Eyres seem to have used the name interchangeably with Blount, the earliest record of the family being Nicholas le Blount (Heyr), in 1204. They were officials, probably foresters, to the Norman Court, with branches in Derbyshire and Broham, in Wiltshire. William I ( 1028 – 9 September 1087), was King of England from 1066 to 1087, and as Guillaume II was Duke of Normandy from 1035 to 1087. ...
