A three point play is a play in basketball where a participant/player is fouled in the act of a shot, but still makes the basket. The player then receives one free throw instead of the traditional two that would be awarded if the basket were not made. If the additional free throw is made the player receives 2 points for the basket "and one" from the foul shot. In todays game 3 points can be obtained from shooting beyond the arch but in the past before the ABA, NBA merger in the mid-late 70's ther was no 3 point line (except for the ABA) and this was the only way to score three points in one play.
