Triple decker apartment house in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts A triple-decker or three-decker is a three-family apartment building, usually of frame construction, in which all three apartment units are stacked on top of one another. Each apartment typically has a front and/or back porch and, because the buildings are usually freestanding, windows on all four sides. They were most commonly built in medium to large cities in the New England area, particularly Boston, Worcester, Lawrence, and Lowell, Massachusetts between 1870 and 1920, primarily as housing for the large numbers of European immigrants then flooding those cities. They were regarded as much more livable than their brick and stone tenement counterparts in other Northeastern cities, as they allowed for airflow and light on all four sides of each building.
