Ticlopidine is a drug used for its antiplatelet action. Like clopidogrel, it is an adenosine diphosphate receptor inhibitors. It is used in patients where aspirin is not tolerated. It has been reported to increase the risk of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP).

Ticlopidine is used to reduce the risk of stroke.
Ticlopidine also is used before open heart surgery and in the treatment of sickle cell disease, certain types of kidney disease (primary glomerulonephritis), and blocked arteries in the legs.
Ticlopidine prevents blood from clotting so it may take longer than usual for you to stop bleeding if you are cut or injured.

Patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to aspirin or ticlopidine with the hypothesis that, in a fl population, 500 mg per day of ticlopidine would be more effective in preventing recurrent stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), or vascular death than 650 mg per day of aspirin.
Although a slight excess of strokes in the ticlopidine group was not statistically significant, Kaplan-Meier curves indicated a trend toward a statistically significant difference in time to fatal or nonfatal stroke favoring the aspirin group.
Ticlopidine has been shown to be effective in preventing stroke, with a marginally significant difference in the prevention of recurrent stroke or death from any cause compared with aspirin.
